Rising water levels in Lake Baringo and Lake Bogoria have posed a significant threat to existing infrastructure. The LoboiSandai Road in Mochongoi Ward, Baringo South, has been rendered impassable after being submerged by the expanding waters of Lake Bogoria following heavy rainfall in the area.
The Department of Roads and Transport, led by Chief Officer Geofrey Kosgei, together with the Directorate of Disaster and Risk Management under the leadership of Director Mike Baimet, and the Office of the Baringo South Sub-County Administrator, conducted a site visit to assess the damage and coordinate immediate intervention measures.
In collaboration with key stakeholders including the Office of the Area MP and with the support of United Democratic Alliance candidate for senate seat in Baringo Vincent Chemitei, machinery has been mobilized to the site, and restoration works are currently underway. The repairs are expected to be completed as soon as possible to restore normal transport operations.
While assessing the situation, the Chief Officer assured residents that technical staff from the department will work closely with the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) to monitor and supervise the ongoing works, ensuring that quality standards are strictly adhered to.
The team also inspected damaged sections of the Lake Bogoria Reserve Road, where flooding has severely disrupted access to key tourist sites, negatively impacting the tourism sector. The Department of Roads has committed to providing machinery to facilitate repairs and create alternative diversions to bypass submerged sections, ensuring continued access for visitors to the scenic attractions.
