Plans are underway to improve the management of the KimalelGoat Auction and Cultural Festival, a yearly event that positions Baringo Countyas a premier producer of livestock in Kenya. A strategy meeting between theCounty Government of Baringo and the title sponsor of the event, the KCB Bank,resolved to streamline operations to ensure a better experience by allstakeholders.
Among the measures being put in place to make thegrand goat event more efficient is dissemination of a selection criteria for goatsand the identification (including tagging) of goats three months to the auctiondate. There are also plans to engage farmers and buyers to ensure that theirexpectations are made. The agricultural extension officers and managers of the33 sale yard across Baringo County will be engaged to ensure that equitable supplyquotas from all sub-counties.
Kimalel Goat Auction was started in the mid 1980s bythe former President of Kenya, Hon. Daniel Arap Moi. The market stalled uponhis retirement and was revived by Governor Benjamin Cheboi in 2013.
The CECM Agriculture Livestock and Fisheries, RisperChepkonga, thanked the KCB Bank for their continued support. Ms Chepkonga saysBaringo County Government will work with all stakeholders to ensure that the logisticalchallenges faced in the past are robustly addressed to ensure that every farmergets value for his or her products and every buyer gets value for the money heor she brings to Baringo,
The goat auction has had a remarkable past, recording asteady increase of goats from 2013 to 2025. A rapid growth was recorded in 2024and 2025, the auction saw 1,678 farmers deliver 8,495 goats, resulting in atotal income of KES 110,435,000. Baringo south recording the highest number ofgoats (3,906) and Eldama Ravine recording the lowest (50).
However, the auction faced challenges during the 2020and 2021 COVID19 pandemic where ta auction did not take place.
