The County Government of Baringo is strengthening the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to improve land governance, planning and service delivery through enhanced capacity in geospatial data management.

This was underscored during the conclusion of a three-day GIS Champions Training held early August at the County GIS Laboratory at the County Headquarters in Kabarnet under the EU-FAO-funded Digital Land Governance Programme (DLGP).

The training, conducted in collaboration with the Council of Governors-Kenya (CoG), the European Union in Kenya, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the County Covernment, brought together officers and technical teams from various departments.

Participants were equipped with practical skills in collecting, managing and analysing spatial data to support evidence-based planning, policy formulation, resource management and efficient service delivery.

Speaking at the close of the training, Chief Officer for Housing and Urban Development Charles Kipkulei appreciated the EU and FAO for supporting the county's adoption of GIS in land use planning and management.

Kipkulei said the Department of Lands will work with other county departments to mainstream GIS into routine planning, reporting and decision-making, while promoting the use of the CoG data portal.

The initiative is expected to strengthen institutional capacity, improve access to reliable spatial information and promote more transparent, efficient and sustainable development across Baringo County.

Also present were Chief Officer for Livestock and Fisheries Wendot Chemjor and Directors Gideon Tirok (ICT) and Daudi Aengwo (Administration).
