PS John Loltuwa Assesses Schools Affected by Rising Water Levels in Baringo

The Principal Secretary for Basic Education, PS John Loltuwa, visited schools affected by the rising water levels of Lake Baringo, Lake 94 and Lake Bogoria in Baringo County as part of the Governments El Niño preparedness and response efforts.

The PS was accompanied by the CECM for Education, Vocational Training and Library Services, Mrs. Peninah Bartuin, and other education and county officials. Also present were Area MP Hon. Charles Kamuren, MCA Paul Lolgisoi of Makutani Ward, and MCA Wesley Lekakimon of Ilchamus Ward.

The team visited Noosukuro, Longeiwan, Leswaa and Lake Bogoria Girls schools, which are among the institutions affected by the rising water levels. An aerial assessment of other affected schools was also undertaken to provide a broader view of the situation.

A total of 17 schools have been affected, with five currently in critical condition and requiring relocation. The Government, through multisectoral agencies, is reviewing the situation and assessing appropriate interventions. Depending on the outcome of the assessment, some of the affected schools may be relocated to safer sites.

PS Loltuwa informed the public that the Government is putting measures in place to mitigate the effects of the rising water levels and to protect communities and public infrastructure in the affected areas.

He appreciated the local community for its cooperation, particularly for identifying alternative parcels of land that could facilitate the relocation of affected schools.

He further assured learners, parents and education stakeholders that the Government will put in place contingency measures to ensure learners sit their examinations without disruption. Should rising water levels make some examination centres unsafe or inaccessible, alternative arrangements, including relocation of examination centres, will be implemented.

The visit was part of ongoing El Niño preparedness measures aimed at safeguarding learners, teachers and education infrastructure in areas vulnerable to flooding and other climate-related hazards.

The CECM for Education, Vocational Training and Library Services, Mrs. Peninah Bartuin, assured the PS that the County Government of Baringo will provide all necessary support to the Ministry in addressing the situation and ensuring the safety and continuity of education for affected learners.
