The County Government of Baringo has stepped up El Niño preparedness measures across the county, with ongoing efforts to improve drainage and reduce the risk of flooding in vulnerable areas.

The clearing of bushes, removal of waste and opening of blocked culverts is underway in Kabarnet Municipality, Barwessa, Koloa, Tangulbei and Kabartonjo towns. The interventions are intended to improve the flow of storm water, prevent waterlogging and minimise damage to roads, homes and other public infrastructure.

With the expected above normal rains, residents are advised to remain vigilant, particularly those living in flood-prone and landslide-prone areas. Communities are encouraged to avoid crossing swollen rivers and streams, stay away from unstable slopes and promptly report emerging risks to the relevant authorities.

Farmers are also encouraged to take advantage of the rains by preparing their farms early, planting suitable crops and making the most of the available moisture, while adopting appropriate soil and water conservation measures.

The County Government continues to work with communities and partners to strengthen preparedness, reduce risks and protect lives, livelihoods and infrastructure during the rainy season.
