The County Director of Veterinary Services (CDVS) Dr. Esmond Kiptum has called on Baringo residents to ensure that all their pets are and equines are vaccinated against Rabies.
The CDVS made the rallying call as Baringo County commemorated World Rabies Day at Eldama Ravine Sub County, where more than 300 pets and over 20 donkeys were vaccinated in Maji Mazuri.
Rabies is a viral disease caused by the rabies virus (Lyssavirus) that affects the central nervous system. It can lead to severe symptoms such as confusion, agitation, and paralysis, ultimately resulting in death if untreated. Primarily affecting mammals, common carriers include dogs, bats, raccoons, and foxes.
The transmission of rabies occurs mainly through the saliva of infected animals via bites or scratches. Infected hosts can spread the virus during the symptomatic phase, which begins after the virus has entered their saliva. While the virus can survive outside its host in suitable conditions, it is sensitive to UV light and desiccation.
Preventing the spread of rabies involves several strategies, such as vaccinating pets and ensuring all domestic animals are up-to-date on their rabies vaccines. It is important to avoid contact with wild animals to reduce the risks of interaction with potentially rabid animals.
In case of contact with suspected rabid animals, post-exposure prophylaxis with rabies vaccines and immunoglobulin should be administered promptly to ensure effective prevention of the disease.
The occasion was also graced by the leadership of KVA Rift Valley and Utunzi Africa Animal Welfare Organisation, who are instrumental partners in animal health and welfare matters within the County.
The annual event is marked to raise awareness, promote animal welfare, and work towards a rabies-free community.
